According to the laws of vapour as the pressure increases the temperature
of the gas in a closed container increases. The Diesel engines also
functions on the same principle. The Diesel Injection Pump does
the work of pumping fuel into the cylinder at such a high pressure
that the temperature of the fuel and air mixture in the cylinder
rises to over 3000 C. Consequently the fuel catches fire during
the compression stroke of the engine and the combustion stroke of
the engine begins thereby starting the engine. Diesel Fuel Injection
pumps are fitted somewhere between the Fuel Tank of the vehicle
and the cylinder of the engine. The pressure with which a Diesel
Fuel pump delivers the Fuel into the Cylinder is specific and characteristic
as per the cylinder volume. Diesel Injection Pumps can be made by
casting of Alloy Steel, Grey Cast Iron, Aluminium and combination
of materials.
